What qualifies as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency generally involves any situation requiring immediate treatment to stop ongoing tissue bleeding, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. Common examples include:

  • A permanent tooth being knocked out.
  • Severe swelling in the gums or face (which may indicate infection).
  • Uncontrolled bleeding in the mouth.
  • A fractured or cracked tooth where the pulp is exposed.

Time is the most critical factor. Try to see a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes.

  • Handle the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root.
  • If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water (no soap or scrubbing).
  • Try to place it back in the socket. If that isn’t possible, keep it moist by placing it in a small container of milk or tucked inside your cheek.

First, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently use dental floss to ensure no food is trapped between the teeth. If the pain persists or is accompanied by swelling, contact an emergency dentist. Do not place aspirin or any other painkiller directly against the gums near the aching tooth, as this can burn the gum tissue.

An abscess is a serious infection that usually occurs around the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. It often looks like a painful, pimple-like swelling on the gum. Because infections can spread to other parts of the body if left untreated, an abscess is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention.

It depends on the severity. A minor chip can often wait for a regular appointment. However, if the crack is deep, extends below the gum line, or causes intense pain, it is an emergency. Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce any potential swelling until you can get to the office.

While uncomfortable, a lost filling or crown is usually not a “life-threatening” emergency, but it should be addressed quickly to prevent decay or the tooth shifting. You can use a small piece of sugarless gum or over-the-counter dental cement to temporarily fill the cavity or “glue” the crown back in place until you see the dentist.

For most dental emergencies, you can manage discomfort by:

  • Taking over-the-counter pain relievers (following the label instructions).
  • Applying a cold compress to the cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce inflammation.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water to help kill bacteria and soothe irritated tissues.
